Master Arts needs your help to make our shows a reality. We need a volunteers to help us out with every role behind the scenes!

Box office volunteers will work with the house manager to welcome patrons, assist with questions regarding patrons needs, and sell concessions at intermission.

At Master Arts the stage manager role is critical to a successful production, ensuring that the production runs smoothly on stage and backstage. They oversee the actors and crew backstage and will need to work closely with the director and be aware of all elements of the production to ensure that everything runs smoothly for performances.

Lead: A costume designer creates the look of each character. They will work with the director on the time period, colors, and personalities of the actors to create a fitting costume. They will oversee other costume assistants and acquire costumes with the support of the Master Arts office to finalize the look for the show.

Assistant: The assistant will assist with pulling costumes, making costumes, or repairing costumes during the run of the show, under the direction of the costume designer for the show. There are many ways to help with costumes. Please share your skill and experience with us if you sign up to volunteer for this role, so we can know what opportunities would best suit you.

Lead: A set designer or head builder will work with the director either design the set or make a plan to build the directors design. They will oversee the work of volunteers to construct and paint the set, and select set pieces.

Building Support: A sets volunteer will follow the guidance of the set designer/head builder to construct the set, and potentially do some basic painting.

Painting Support: A painter will meet the painting needs of the set. These can range from basic to a more advanced or detailed mural. Please indicate your level of skill and experience as a painter if you sign up to volunteer in this position, so we can know what opportunities would best suit you.

Lead: Lighting designers work with the director to clarify their vision for the show, hang lights, program the light board, and provide suggestions or ideas to the director for lighting. The designer does not necessarily need to be at every show to run lights, but they should ensure that the directors vision is met, and that the board operators are sufficiently briefed/trained on the show.

Board Operator: The board operator will run lights for the show, following along in the script and the lighting designers instructions to serve the show. Some shows are simplistic with minimal cues, and others are complex with various specific cues and timing required throughout.

This person is responsible for designing and securing all stage properties needed for each character in show, with the assistance of the Master Arts office. They will need to discuss the directors vision and locate, design, or purchase props that meet various needs, within the shows allotted budget.

This person is responsible for preparation and application of make-up to cast members. Key duties may include: consulting with director and costume designer and hairstylist for final approval of characters’ appearances; make-up design; and either apply make-up themselves or train cast members how to do so. They will also work with the Master Arts office for any special make-up needs.
